Green vegetables provide many vitamins, good fiber for the baby. However, there are still vegetables that should not be given to children or should not be eaten too often.
What vegetables should not be given to babies?
- Tapioca (tapioca)
- Digestive disorders: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain…
- Nervous disorders: dizziness, headache… even spasticity, pupil dilation, coma…
- Respiratory disorders: asphyxiation, cyanosis, respiratory failure…
- Coriander
Coriander is a popular spice, making dishes more attractive. However, in children, mothers should avoid this vegetable because it is not good for the baby’s digestive system, increases bile secretion and can affect the liver.
- Beetroot
Although beetroot has many nutritional components, but beets have high nitrate content, when eaten by children, they can be full of stomach and difficult to digest. This is also a vegetable that the mother should limit for the baby to eat.
- Shallot leaves
Mother still uses chives as a remedy when the baby has a fever and teething. However, if the child is in normal health, we should not regularly use this vegetable for the baby because it can cause abdominal pain, indigestion, diarrhea …
- Napa cabbage
Napa cabbage has good nutrients for health and is high in fiber to help promote bowel movements, stimulate digestion… However, because of the high amount of fiber, children with poor digestive system, people with weak spleen should not eat a lot.
Vegetables that should not be combined for babies:
- Sweet potatoes, potatoes and tomatoes
- White radish and carrot
- Tomato and cucumber
- Cabbage and pumpkin
- Amaranth and pear
In general, it is very rare for children to have an allergic reaction when they eat vegetables. But as soon as the child has unusual symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, hives, rash … after eating a specific vegetable or food, the mother needs to take the baby to the hospital immediately.
What healthy vegetables should you feed your baby?
- Carrots: rich in soluble fiber, beta-carotene and alpha-carotene are precursors of vitamin A, many phytochemicals have anti-cancer properties… Carrots are good for the digestive tract (especially when children have diarrhea), the system immunity, vision development… of children. However, mother also note that you should not give your baby too many carrots because it can cause jaundice
- Pumpkin: rich in iron, vitamins, mineral salts and beta carotene. Pumpkin is easy to digest, less allergenic, so it’s good for babies
- Spinach: rich in iron, potassium, zinc, magnesium, iron, calcium, vitamins (A, B1, B2, B6, C, K …)
- Sweet potatoes: lots of potassium, vitamin C, fiber… you can choose orange-fleshed sweet potatoes to get more beta-carotene
- Avocado: contains a lot of unsaturated fat that is good for the development of the brain and nervous system, and helps to enhance the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, K)
- Peas: are one of the vegetables with high protein content, a good source of energy for children
- Broccoli: rich in vitamin C, beta carotene, folic acid, iron, potassium and nutrients with anti-cancer properties. Note when preparing broccoli for your baby, you should steam instead of boiling to keep the vitamin C content high
- Cauliflower: rich in fiber, vitamins and micro-minerals (vitamins C, K, B6, protein, magnesium, phosphorus …). Not only providing nutrition, broccoli also helps to train the baby’s ability to chew and swallow
- Tomatoes: have high water content, high in vitamins A and C
- Potatoes: lots of starch, potassium and vitamins C, B6, folate… good for the heart and blood
